Jayden Estes had his best game of the season, making 9 tackles and 1 tackle for loss (TFL) in Delaware State’s 23-0 loss to Robert Morris on October 12.
Estes missed the first four games of the season due to injury, but in his first three games back, he has recorded 17 total tackles (8 solo, 9 assisted) and 1 TFL, averaging over five tackles per game.
Other top defensive players included Aaron Willis (#44), who also had 9 tackles and 1 TFL, and Kahleef Jimmison (#27), who contributed 6 tackles, 2 TFLs, and 1 of the team’s 2 sacks. The defense limited Robert Morris to 175 rushing yards. On offense, Jaden Sutton led with 69 rushing yards, averaging 4.6 yards per carry. Kyree Benton caught 6 passes for 77 yards, making him the top receiver for the Hornets. Delaware State has a bye next week and will play South Carolina State on October 26.
Basketball Preseason Honors for Robinson
On Monday, the MEAC announced that Delaware State guard Martaz Robinson was selected for the Preseason All-Conference First Team for the 2024-25 season. The Hornets were predicted to finish fifth in the MEAC.
Robinson, a first-team All-MEAC honoree, averaged 15.9 points and 6.5 rebounds last season, helping Delaware State reach the finals of the 2024 MEAC Tournament. He is also a two-time Player of the Week and has scored over 1,000 points in his college career. The Hornets open their season on November 4 at Virginia Tech at 8:00 p.m. Before that, fans can catch them in an exhibition game against Delaware Valley University on October 30 at 7:00 p.m.
Tennis Season Wraps Up
The Delaware State women’s tennis team competed in the 2023 MEAC Individual Championships in Cary, North Carolina, where they reached the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles. Although they did not advance further, the team showed resilience and gained valuable experience for future matches. The Hornets will begin their spring season on February 6 with a home match against Drexel.
Lacrosse Welcomes New Coach
On October 9, 2024, Dr. Alecia Shields-Gadson announced Madeline Price as the new Assistant Women’s Lacrosse Coach at Delaware State University.
Coach Price previously led Milford High School’s lacrosse team and was a standout athlete at Smyrna High School, where she earned first-team all-conference and all-state honors and set records for most goals scored. She continued her career at Shenandoah University, excelling in both lacrosse and field hockey, and was named to the All-Tournament Team in 2019. She also served as head coach for Delaware Military Academy before joining Delaware State. The university is excited to welcome Coach Price to the Hornet family.
Volleyball Continues Winning Streak
The Delaware State volleyball team followed up their 3-2 win over NCCU with a straight-set victory (25-18, 25-15, 25-23) over South Carolina State on Sunday at Memorial Hall. The win improved their overall record to 8-11 and 4-2 in MEAC play. Aaliyah Mitchell led the team with 8 kills and a hitting percentage of .294. The Hornets will play again on October 18 when they face UMES in Princess Anne at 6:00 p.m.
Women’s Soccer Struggles Continue
The Delaware State women’s soccer team lost to Stonehill at home on October 13, following a road loss to Le Moyne. The Hornets now have a record of 0-13-1 overall and 0-5-1 in DI Independent competition.
