Despite Jaden Sutton’s outstanding performance, scoring three touchdowns, Delaware State lost to South Carolina State with a final score of 69-35. This game brought the Bulldogs to a 5-2 record (1-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), while Delaware State’s record moved to 1-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Sutton led Delaware State’s offense with 150 rushing yards and three touchdowns, averaging 10 yards per carry. This game marked his second of the season where he rushed over 100 yards and scored multiple touchdowns. His season totals now stand at 115 carries for 782 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging seven yards per carry.
Jayden Jenkins added 31 rushing yards, averaging 6.2 yards per carry. Skyler Jordan caught a 71-yard pass for a touchdown. On defense, Darren Cook and Kyree Benton each recovered a fumble, allowing Delaware State to score 14 points off turnovers. Despite the final score, the defense held South Carolina State’s rushing game to 154 yards while Delaware State rushed for 196 yards.
On Tuesday, Mikal Davis and Jestus Johnson from Delaware State were named MEAC Rookie and Offensive Lineman of the Week, respectively. Davis threw for 60 yards and a touchdown, while Johnson achieved a 90% blocking grade with three pancake blocks.
The Hornets return to action against Howard University on November 2 in Washington, DC, with a 1 p.m. kickoff.
Sarah Orensky Leads Delaware State Bowling at Destination Orlando
The Delaware State women’s bowling team had a strong showing at the Destination Orlando event. Sarah Orensky led the Hornets with a 215.6 average, as the team went 6-7 across Baker and Traditional matches, finishing 14th overall. Delaware State earned wins over Alabama A&M and Prairie View A&M and will next compete on November 9-10 at the MEAC event in Greensboro, NC.
Men’s Cross Country Wins Kenilworth Park Invite
On October 18, Delaware State men’s cross country team won the Kenilworth Park Invite, finishing ahead of Howard University. Sophomore Marian Drazan set a new school record in the 5k, finishing first with a time of 14:13.6. Teammates Devin Smith and Jonathan Drew also placed in the top five, helping Delaware State achieve a total time of 1:15:17. The team is preparing for the MEAC Championships on November 2.
Women’s Cross Country Takes Third at Kenilworth Park Invite
Delaware State women’s cross country team placed third at the Kenilworth Park Invite on October 18. Ashley Lagat led the team, finishing sixth overall with a time of 18:40.1. Purity Kattam placed eighth, and the team now looks ahead to the MEAC Cross Country Championships on November 2.
Mark Bennett Appointed as Delaware State’s Deputy AD for Athletic Governance
Mark Bennett has been named Delaware State University’s Deputy Athletic Director for Athletic Governance. Previously at Lincoln University as Associate Athletic Director for Compliance, Bennett brings strong experience in athletic management and governance. His recent work includes overseeing a $35 million athletic facility renovation. Bennett said, “I look forward to supporting Delaware State’s vision of becoming a top contemporary HBCU.”
Hornets Volleyball Defeats Coppin State in Four Sets
Delaware State volleyball achieved a four-set win (25-15, 23-25, 25-20, 25-11) over Coppin State at Memorial Hall. Martyna Kmuk led with 14 kills, while Gerren Tomlin contributed 17 kills and 16 digs. The Hornets are now 10-11 overall and 6-2 in MEAC play, with their next game on October 27 at Morgan.
