Master Lyte Burly, the founder of 52 Blocks, Inc., is a martial arts aficionado, coaching and practicing boxing, 52 Blocks, kickboxing, wrestling, Wing Chun, Pa Kua, Tai Chi, and Hsing-I for over three decades.
Lyte grew up in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York and has had a passion for martial arts since he was 9 years old. As a youth, he attended Girard College in Philadelphia, where he received military training that encouraged physical fitness, self-discipline and leadership skills. There he performed Taekwondo and wrestling. Lyte also practiced karate at his local YMCA.
When Lyte was 12, his initial interest in 52 Blocks was sparked when he saw someone from his hometown on television practicing it. Today, he is well-known for continuing the legacy of 52 Blocks and has been practicing and teaching it in New York for over a decade.
In 2007, Lyte founded 52 Blocks, Inc., where he offers in-person and online training sessions to students between the ages of 6 to 45. Lyte has conducted training seminars in various locations internationally and nationally, including in Denmark, Canada, Maryland, Texas and Michigan. He’s produced and sold four instructional DVDs and accumulated over one million views on more than 175 instructional videos on YouTube. On his website, Lyte also sells his books, including, The Legendary Art of 52 Blocks and Habits of a Warrior.
What he appreciates about 52 Blocks is that it’s the only martial art with a focus of self-preservation. Bred in the streets and prisons of the U.S., 52 Blocks is historically an artform that encompasses various defense techniques.
Lyte is also a boxing coach who trains students ages 6 to 27, some of whom won local competitions including The Golden Gloves. He’s also competed in amateur fighting tournaments in a range of disciplines, winning multiple 1st place medals.
Lyte plans to make 52 Blocks more mainstream in the future, by opening schools dedicated to its training, working with entertainment executives to include it in movies and TV shows, and creating more YouTube videos and other social media content. He’s also hoping to expand his online and virtual presence by using FPV goggles and holography.
