Q: For the ones that don’t know, tell them a little about yourself? My name is Phoenix, I am the owner of Love.ENT a production company in which I am an artist, engineer, videographer, computer repairman and administrator. I decided to become an artist first because I have a voice and I will use it for the greater future of our community by expression, activism and solidarity.
Q: At what age did you decide to start doing music?I started writing music at the tender age of 7 years old, which started as poems until I developed my skill to song writing by paying attention to the details of album covers from back in the day that had the lyrics on them. 7 years old seems like an early age but coming from where I’m from (SE,DC) and experiencing some of things I went through as a child, it was the best way for me to fight depression and express myself when I felt voiceless.
Q: Where did you get your stage name Phoenix from? What’s the meaning behind your name? When I was in my junior year in college, this might sound crazy but I kept hearing the word Phoenix. Although I didn’t know what the word meant, I felt like that was God’s way of telling me this is who I am, so I researched it and it fit my description and ever since then, I was Phoenix, rising from the ashes to only be reborn again.
Q: Can you remember the first song that you ever recorded? The first song I recorded was in 2011 after a bad breakup, I put it all into that song and it was invigorating because I realized my power.
Q: What’s it like when you’re in the studio making music? When I’m in the studio, it’s always a vibe because I set the tone with candles, incense, some trees and brown liquor lol. I always take my time with the process to make sure I’m saying exactly what I need to, and every bar will hit. I’m an engineer so I’m overly critical about how my music sounds and feels.
Q: If you could work with any mainstream artist in the game. Who would it be, and why? If I could work with any artist, it would be Curren$y not just because he is my favorite artist, but I know his sound matches with some of my works. I love how he puts metaphors into every bar and his ride the beat like a Chevy Chevelle.
Q: So what is Phoenix currently working on?Currently, I am working on music videos, and constantly creating new content. My main goal right now is to put music out but I’m also trying to discover if I should start with activism and bringing awareness to the plight in the black community.
Q: How does it feel winning the ATL Who’s Next competition on Dec 6th? It feels great to win this competition because I honestly didn’t know there was a competition, I was just happy for the opportunity to allow my voice to be heard.
Q: What can we expect next from Phoenix? I took so many losses that I actually feel like the winning season is approaching, thanks to my three siblings, my guardian angels in heaven watching over me. Expect great things in the near future for me, I have always been different, so don’t expect me to do things like everyone else. God granted me vision, hope, peace and happiness. I have a way to go but I’ll get there soon through the grace of God. Thank you again for the opportunity to be heard
