Norfolk State overcame a three-point halftime deficit to defeat Delaware State 38-19 on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans improved to 4-7 on the season and 2-2 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play, while the Hornets dropped to 1-10 overall and 0-4 in conference action.
Jaden Sutton led the Hornets’ rushing attack with 146 yards and one touchdown, averaging 6.6 yards per carry. Sutton became the second running back in the MEAC to rush for 1,000 yards this season and the first to achieve the milestone for Delaware State since 2007. North Carolina Central’s running back was the first to reach 1,000 yards this season. Jayden Jenkins contributed 27 yards and one touchdown on the ground.
NyGhee Lolley led the receiving game with five catches for 78 yards.
Defensively, Delaware State forced one turnover, converting it into three points. The Hornets also showed resilience on third down, converting 40% of their attempts. The defense held Norfolk State to just 276 total yards, with Kahleef Jimmison recording a team-high 11 tackles and Barry Wagner adding eight.
The Hornets will conclude their season with a game against North Carolina Central on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Men’s Basketball Continues Strong Play
After a victory on Tuesday, November 12, the Delaware State men’s basketball team extended their winning streak with a 70-54 win over Gwynedd Mercy at home on Saturday, November 16. Martaz Robinson posted a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Hornets. Robert Smith also contributed significantly in the win against Cheyney, leading the team with 22 points and two steals.
The Hornets will return to action on Tuesday, November 19, when they face Providence College on the road at 7:00 p.m.
Women’s Basketball Splits on the Week
The Delaware State women’s basketball team had a mixed week, suffering an 80-42 defeat to Ole Miss at home on Thursday before bouncing back to defeat Cheyney 80-44 on Saturday. Kiarra McElrath led the team with 13 points against Ole Miss. In the win over Cheyney, Mahogany Cottingham scored a team-high 32 points, while Ericka Huggins recorded a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds off the bench. Kyra Lawrence added 12 points and two blocks.
The Hornets (2-3) will take the court again on Wednesday, November 20, when they travel to face the University of Pittsburgh at 11:00 a.m.
Hornets Complete 3-Set Sweep Over UMES
The Delaware State volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-21, 25-16) over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday at Memorial Hall. The victory improved the Hornets’ overall record to 14-13 and their MEAC record to 10-4.
Gerren Tomlin led the Hornets offensively with 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .286.
Delaware State will host the 2024 MEAC Championship Tournament on Friday, November 22.
