The Delaware State Hornets came into today’s contest looking to stay alive in the MEAC championship hunt, as Coach Jackson and his squad took down the Howard Bison. It was a game full of penalties on both teams with a side of chippiness after some plays.
Hornets cornerback Wayne Favors III picked off Bison quarterback Tyriq Starks that went to the house for 91 yards in the 3rd quarter. The Bison were completely shut down in the first half, just being held to 17-6 going into halftime after a costly facemask penalty by Delaware State that put Howard into field goal range.
The Hornets had five players rush for over 20 yards in the game as they continue to be the No.1 rushing offense in FCS, putting up 205 yards on the ground today. Jayden Sauray had a rushing touchdown from five yards out while going 7/13 with 144 yards through the air. Wide receiver and defensive back Ryan Pellum Taylor also had a four yard touchdown run before half.
The Bison didn’t go down without a fight when Starks connected with Andre Cooper II for 60 yards in the 4th quarter. Starks finished the game going 21/39 on his passes for 252 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
The Bison fall to 4-7, 1-3 in MEAC play as they finish the season next week against Norfolk State, while Del State improves to 8-3 and undefeated in MEAC play at 4-0. The Hornets have an exciting regular season finale next Saturday when undefeated South Carolina State come into town. That game will be for the MEAC championship and a ticket to the celebration bowl in December.
It’s going down in the Hornet’s nest next week with kickoff at 1 PM ON ESPN+.
