The Jamaican-Canadian artist from Edmonton turns his life –
relationships, pressure, ambition, setbacks, success and
everything in between – into music that feels lived rather than
manufactured. Moving freely between hip-hop, R&B and
melodic rap, Karisse has built a sound that feels familiar
enough to connect instantly, but different enough to leave its
own impression.
That balance comes from an obsession with the details:
production, samples, interpolation, mixing, ad-libs, delivery
and the small decisions that can completely change a record.
At the centre of that development is longtime producer,
engineer and best friend Seriously Taylor. Their relationship
extends far beyond the studio. Taylor has helped shape
Karisse’s sound, ear and style from the ground up. Put
simply: without Taylor, there is no Karisse G.
For Karisse, though, music is only part of the vision. The
bigger pursuit is becoming proof that circumstances don’t
have to define the outcome.
At the centre of Karisse’s artistry is the idea that there shouldn’t be a limit on what you can become. His sound has been developed closely alongside longtime producer, engineer and best friend Seriously Taylor, with the two building a musical identity that feels familiar enough to connect immediately while still distinctly Karisse.
His current release, “Slap Up,” was released September 25, and his next record, “League Bound,” is upcoming.
