Q: At what age did you have that desire to start doing music?
Melanin Monroe: I remember early on, I would sing around the house and everything on tv, then sing for family and older cousins. I may have been as young as five or six years old.
Q: Who were some of your favorite artists that you listened to that influenced you to start making music?
Melanin Monroe: Artist that have influenced me are K Camp, Cardi B., Mary J. Blige, and Kevin Gates.
Q: Can you recall your first studio session? What was that moment like for you?
Melanin Monroe: My first studio session was around 11 years old. My father built a studio for his dealer, and I was allowed to play in it a few times. It was amazing then as much as it is now.
Q: Where did you get your name from Melanin Monroe?
Melanin Monroe: The name Monroe is of course from the Iconic Marilyn Monroe, but it speaks to her struggle and character more than the name. The Melanin portion of my name comes first because that is what makes me; I am first a black woman then I have experienced struggle and hardship in life and during my uprise.
Q: What was that first song that really gave you that buzz in the music scene?
Melanin Monroe: The first song that gave me local buzz was “Keep Callin Me” released in late 2020. The song that gave me national buzz was, “Rich Bitch” featuring Trina.
Q: In the short while that you’ve been in the music game, you’ve already scored a track with a platinum selling recording artist. How were you able to get on a track with Trina?
Melanin Monroe: I was able to get on a track with Trina, via a Unity Project. I was asked to participate after a promotion company saw my work on social media. I was then asked to write a hook for Trina and we would pitch it to her team. Within weeks we got a 16 back from Trina on my hook!
Q: If you can work with any mainstream artist, who would it be, and why?
Melanin Monroe: The Very first artist I would work with would be K Camp. I enjoy his music and with the exception of being opposite sex I think we have a lot of simularities in our sound. I think, from listening to his music, our musical minds work the same.
Q: Q: Not only are you in the music game, but you have your eyelash line as well? Tell us a little about your eyelash line.
Melanin Monroe: My eyelash line is “Blondish” by Melanin Monroe. I’m all about girl power, but also I’m a business woman and I researched very early on how important it is to have merchandise as an artist. I wanted to do something different for the ladies but also manage cost; because I am a struggling artist nonetheless. Analytically speaking, I wanted the ladies to know this music was for them and the data showed they didn’t know that, so Introduced my eyelash line.
Q: What can we expect next from Melanin Monroe?
Melanin Monroe:
