Coach Jackson and the Delaware State Hornets traveled to Baltimore last night, in a barn burner on Friday night lights, against the Morgan State Bears. Back-to-back nationally televised games for the Hornets on ESPNU did not disappoint. The Hornets played bully ball in the first half as they led 14-3 heading into halftime, but did not get on the board in the second.
Hornets running back James Jones broke a 68 yard touchdown run from just the second play of scrimmage to give Del State a quick 7-0 lead. Jones almost had a second touchdown of the game, until he fumbled at the goal-line but it was quickly recovered by offensive lineman Amori Francis.
Then early in the fourth quarter, Bears running back Randall Nauden took it to the house 67 yards to make it 14-12. The Bears would try a two-point attempt to tie it but came up just short. In the end it all came down to freshman kicker Alex Amaya, as he and the Bears looked to hand Del State their first loss in the MEAC this season.
Amaya would go on to miss the 45 yard field goal as the Hornets celebrated and moved to 3-0 in the conference. Jones finished the game with 155 yards on 13 attempts and one TD. The Hornets will be back home next Saturday as they take on the 4-6, 1-2 Howard Bison at 1PM on ESPN+.
