The most anticipated game on the HBCU football schedule this year between the Norfolk State Spartans and the Delaware State Hornets did not disappoint. It was a game that made history as former teammates DeSean Jackson & Michael Vick and their squads did battle under the lights in a very familiar place for both head coaches, Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles.
As fans from both schools brought the energy to the Linc, the Hornets rallied and won the game improving their record to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play to remain first. The Spartans on the other hand fall to 1-8 and dead last in the MEAC at 0-2.
It was a pretty quiet first half for both teams Cornerback Amir Anderson blocked a punt late in the second quarter to put the Hornets up 10-6 going into halftime and to record his second touchdown off the season.
Quarterback Kaiden Bennett completed 16/18 of his passes for 158 yards including a 24-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tahmir Ellis in the fourth to put the Hornets up 19-6. James Jones broke off a touchdown 76 yard run as he had 109 yards on 10 carries to make it 27-13.
Norfolk State quarterback Otto Kuhns did not play badly at all either, completing 22/34 of his passes with 311 yards, three TD’s and one interception. While wide receivers JJ Evans and DreSean Kendrick had monster games, with Evans recording five receptions, 124 yards and two touchdowns and Kendrick recording nine receptions, 112 yards and two TD’s.
The Hornets will have the weekend off, as they prepare for next Friday’s matchup against the Morgan State Bears under the lights at 7PM on ESPN2 or ESPNU.
