According to The Streamr, Tyler Perry will become the new CEO of BET. The arrangement is a relief for Paramount Global, which, according to a source, is “hemorrhaging money.”
With this new agreement, Perry will gain control over the BET Media Group, which also owns VH1.
In 2019, Paramount Streaming and Tyler Perry Studios collaborated to create BET+, the streaming service for the cable channel. The service has resulted in a 4-year partnership between the two.
According to CNBC, insiders at Paramount reportedly thought selling to a group of affluent black investors may “unlock opportunities and value.”
Earlier this year, Perry told Entertainment Tonight that his interest in purchasing the network was no rumor.
“Rumor? No, it’s not a rumor, I’ve been there for four years now and had tremendous success.”
He said, “I wasn’t expecting this to happen, so, yes – if that is possible, I’m very, very interested in taking as much of it… If it’s possible, I’m gonna take as much of it as I can.”
