Syracuse, NY — February 27, 2026 — A powerful legacy now lives permanently on the streets of Syracuse.
The City of Syracuse officially unveiled “Donna Reese Way,” an honorary street designation recognizing the life, leadership, and lifelong advocacy of civil rights and disability rights champion Donna Reese. The sign stands at West Brighton Avenue and Webster Avenue — the very neighborhood where her journey began and where her commitment to community was first rooted.
Donna Reese was more than an advocate — she was a movement. As former President of the Syracuse-Onondaga NAACP, she stood boldly at the forefront of racial justice, civic engagement, and equity initiatives throughout Central New York. Her leadership helped strengthen bridges between communities, institutions, and generations.
Her impact extended far beyond titles. Donna Reese worked tirelessly to create space for underrepresented voices, including her instrumental role in expanding cultural representation through the Pan African Village at the New York State Fair. Even after losing her vision, she continued mentoring individuals facing vision and hearing loss, proving that purpose does not retire — it evolves.
“Donna Reese Way” is not just a sign. It is a symbol. A symbol of resilience. A symbol of fearless leadership. A symbol of generational influence.
Her legacy continues through the lives she uplifted, the doors she opened, and the foundation being established in her honor — ensuring scholarships and opportunities for future leaders who will walk in the path she paved.
The Reese family expresses deep gratitude to the City of Syracuse, community partners, and all who gathered to celebrate a life that transformed a city. While Donna Reese may no longer walk these streets physically, her spirit, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to justice will forever remain embedded in them. Legacy is not what you leave behind. It is what continues to grow because you lived.
